Following Henry Hudson's exploration on behalf of the Dutch East India Company in 1609, the first Dutch settlers arrived in 1624 to set up trade with the natives. Beaver pelts (fur) were at the top of the list and in major demand in Europe and there were tons of beaver roaming all over the NY area (like rats, today). Peter Minuit purchased Manna-hata from the Lenape Indians two years later in 1626.
