The 4 acts known as the Coercive Acts, or the Intolerable Acts, were passed in April 1774. They were intended to punish Massachusetts over rebellious acts including the Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773).

The First Continental Congress met in September, 1774 and supported Massachusetts in their resistance to the acts. The final end to the effectiveness of the acts came on April 19, 1775 when the first battles of the Revolutionary War were fought, and definitively with the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
