The Voyage to the Chesapeake departs London December 20, 1606

The ships with their 105 colonists who have signed up to go leave Blackwall in London colonists on three ships (two rented ships). It is not too difficult to find colonists. Persons are recruited with the lure of gold and land by the company. It is said England at this time is overpopulated and lacks opportunities for employment. Many sign up believing the boastful reports about the bountiful land and riches to be had in the New World. Among the passengers are carpenters, a blacksmith, a mason, a tailor, a goldsmith, a barber, and two surgeons, soldiers and way too many gentlemen. About 50% of the colonists are gentlemen who expect to do little work.

The Ships

The ship Susan (Sara) Constant 120 tons- a rented ship (Captain Newport )

The ship Godspeed 50 tons - a rented ship (Captain Gosnold)

The " barge" / pinnace Discovery 20 tons- a small purchased ship to navigate the rivers (acting Captain Ratcliff)

The voyage

The voyage left December 20, 1606 and did not encounter any really severe problems. There were no ships lost and no fights with the Spanish. There was a depressing delay aboard ship, of 6 weeks duration, spent rolling to and fro in the English Channel waiting for favorable winds to sail in the needed South direction. There was the event during the voyage of Captain John Smith being charged wrongfully with concealing a mutiny. The ships took a southerly route stopping at several Caribbean Islands to which they stopped to refresh themselves. Not one colonist was lost to sickness on the voyage of 4 and 1/2 months. The ship first arrived at the mouth of the4 Chesapeake Bay April 26, 1607.

The first single white woman came to Jamestown in 1608, 90 more came in 1619.

Fun fact: During the Starving Time in Jamestown (1609-1610) Henry Collins was reported to have killed his pregnant wife "salted her" and ate her. So that makes one less woman in Jamestown.
