Some say it has never ended - there was no peace treaty because the Union never recognised the Confederacy as a sovereign nation with which to negotiate.

The effective end was April 9th 1865, when Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to U.S. Grant at Appomattox. There could be no serious attempt to prolong the war after that.

The only other sizeable Confederate army, under Joseph E. Johnston, surrendered to Sherman a fortnight later.

In mid-May, the Confederate government held its last cabinet meeting, which could be taken as an official winding-up.

Other small skirmishes took place in the West, and a number of Confederate officers escaped to Mexico and never surrendered.
