It begins on the date of the last activity of an account. Any action such as a partial payment or payment agreement by the debtor negates the time the SOL has been activated and the time status will begin over at the next DLA.

Please be advised, the SOL is not an automatic defense against a civil suit for debt owed. The debtor must present it as such with valid documentation to support his or her claim. In most US states the presiding judge can determine whether or not an SOL can be tolled to what extent and for what reasoning.

What do I say to credit card companies who call after my statutes of limitations is up?

First you need to be sure the limitation is up. The clock starts at the point the last acknowledgement of the debt was made. That could be a phone conversation, or a payment, at which point the clock starts over.

Is it true that the statute of limitations doesn't apply if you're out of the country?

Yes. In general, statutes of limitations are tolled (the clock stops on them) when you're out of the jurisdiction in which you committed the crime.

Does the statute of limitations begin when you default on a loan or make payments to collection agencies?

In most states and in Canada, any time there is activity on an overdue account, the time limit rests. For instance, if you have an old debt that is due to be erased from your credit file in 3 months, but suddenly begin a payment plan, the clock starts all over.

It will depend on who you are filing with. If it is with the insurance company, it is specified in the contract. There may be a clause regarding discovery of damages and when the clock starts.

It depends on the statute of limitations in your jurisdiction. In some places, the clock starts ticking from when the fraud was discovered, while in others it starts from when it occurred. Consult with a lawyer to determine if you still have legal recourse.

What is the date from which the 7-year clock starts with a collection agency?

I believe it's the date it goes onto your credit report. Key is to NEVER say that you'll pay on xxx date. Never make promises to pay because it will restart the clock.

how long can you be held without being indicted?

An investigation may run for years, and an indictment would not be filed until the investigation completes. The 'clock' on your right to a speedy trial does not begin until after you have been arrested. There are time limits, however, in which charges may be filed (statutes of limitations). These limits depend on the state in which they occurred and the nature of the offense (there is no statute of limitations on murder, however).
