check engine light could be a number of things. First and easiest is to check your gas cap. Make sure its on tight every time you fill up. If that's not the case then go to AutoZone or Checker or some autoparts chain around you and ask them to read the codes. Or even take it to the dealer if its still under warrinty. "check engine" is usually emisson system, something is not right in the system, the code that the computer generates will tell you what it is. You can also buy a code reader, but they get a little pricey.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

It sounds like your fan clutch is bad.
If it is an automatic, the fluid should be at operating temperature. The transmission in park and the engine at idle. Remove the dipstick and wipe it dry and check the level. Do not overfill.
