Studies of genetics in India shows widespread population mixture took place between 4,200 to 1,900 years ago (2200 BCE-100 CE), where-after a shift to endogamy took place and admixture became rare. That said, children belong to the same caste and subset as their parents. If there is a mixture, then one or the other is chosen. Some people have managed to adopt a different caste by moving to a different area of the country and adopting the mannerisms and language of that caste.

The caste of the child's parents. The two parents would have been of the same caste since marrying outside of caste was considered unacceptable. Although I write this in the past tense, it is still widely prevalent.

Why children from the poor families are not sent to school in India?

In India, there is something called the caste system. The priest is at the very top of the system, then comes the warriors, land owners and rulers. Succeeding them are the merchants, then the artisans and the agriculturalists, and last of all the "Untouchables". The caste system is devised in such away that a person born in the lower categories will never be able to work his way into being in a higher category. The "Untouchables" are uneducated - never going to school. Therefore a child born in the "Untouchable" category will never go to school or achieve any social merit.
