This is an adaptation which not only helps the gecko to camouflage in its habitat, but it also helps the gecko escape from predators. If the predator grabs hold of the what it thinks is the head, the gecko can drop its tail and escape safely. The tail grows back with time.
Yes. The green-eyed gecko DOES in fact have toepads. They use it whenever climbing trees and branches. It comes very useful when getting away from it's predators.

When in danger a geckos instinct is to run. These animals are generally very quick and can escape harms way in a heart beat. Geckos that aren't so fortunate can release their tails as a method of distraction. The tail will continue to wiggle after it has separated from the body. The gecko will usually have a second chance at running, while the predator's attention is with the tail.
A leaf tailed gecko would be an example of one such animal as would the mimic octopus.
