A measure of the relative increase in blood glucose levels after eating similar amounts of different carbohydrate-containing foods. Pure glucose is given a glycaemic index of 100 per cent and all other foods are compared with it. The glycaemic index was devised to help diabetics manage their diet, but it can also be used by athletes. Many sports nutritionists recommend that exercisers eat complex carbohydrates such as whole-wheat pasta, which have a glycaemic index of less than 50 per cent. A meal with a low glycaemic index should release its glucose slowly during exercise and allow the body's carbohydrate stores to last. {| ! This is in regard to Diabetes type 2, and refers to the Australian breakfast cereal known as "Weetbix", not"Weetabix".Foods are measured on a GI (Glycaemic Index) and the GI of Weetbix is "intermediate". This means that, while Weetbix is not the bext choice to have every day for someone with Type 2 diabetes, there's nothing wrong with having it a couple of times a week. However, you cannot add any sweetener such as sugar or honey, and it is strongly recommended that you have it with warm water and just the tiniest amount of milk (for flavour).Out of all the cereals, only Weetbix and certain brands of Toasted Muesli can be eaten by people with type 2 diabetes, and certainly not every day.
