It means when you light a match over here, how long it takes before your partner over there
can see it. Just like everything else, it takes time for the light to get from here over to there.
The speed it travels is about 186,000 miles a second, or 300,000 kilometers a second.

The speed of light is 299792458 metres/second.

But it is not defined in terms of metres and seconds. It is a set number. Rather, the length of a metre is defined as the distance light travels in 1/299792458 seconds.

They are referring to the speed of light, and the time it takes for light to travel

from here to there. It's awful darn fast, but it's not instantaneous.

It takes light 1.27 seconds to get here from the Moon, 8 1/3 minutes to get here

from the sun, and 4.2 years to get here from the next nearest star.

That means that it takes time for light to travel from one place to another, which

in turn means that you can never see anything at the same exact time it happens.

That's not a big deal on Earth, since light is so fast, and the human brain can't

detect the time lag. But we have to start makiing allowance for it when we build

a GPS system, and when a controller in an easy chair in Virginia is flying a drone

over Pakistan, and when a geologist at JPL is driving the rover around on Mars,

and when the astronomer is looking at the photograph of the super-nova that he

snapped last night.

There are a ridiculous amount of uses that arise involving the speed of light. A well known one is E=mc^2, where E is energy, m is mass and c is the speed of light. That equation explains why nuclear fission and fusion is possible (think atom bombs and the sun).

It is a measure of the distance travelled by light per one unit of time.

What does special relativity say about the speed of light?

The speed of light is constant.

Why do people say faster than the speed of light?

Light travels at approximately 186,000 miles per SECOND. That is fast. So the expression "faster than the speed of light" is used to describe someone or something that is really fast (but it's not actually faster than speed of light)

What is the speed of light and the speed of magnetism?

so Im just going to straight up say use google but also I'm going to say the speed of sound is faster than the speed of light and magnetism is was slower.

When some on say the speed of light what are they referring to?

Light is actually a wave that is emitted from atoms. It radiates outwards, but it must travel to our eyes in order for us to see it. For example, when we look at the sun, the light we see is already eight minutes old since it radiated from the sun. This speed by which it travels has been determined to be 186000 miles per second.

Do you say THE Chinese are ancient people or Chinese are ancient people?

In general, when referring to the entire population as a whole, you would say "the Chinese are an ancient people". To say "Chinese are ancient people" leaves the reference population undefined - are you referring to the entire population of China or are you referring to a select group of Chinese individuals who are older?

What is something that is really fast?

you could say a bulletor light

Why is the speed of light a fact?

A "fact" is basically anything you can state, especially if such a statement is true. Since you can say "light has a speed", and since that is true, it follows that it's a fact. Light through a "vacuum" is the meaning of "the speed of light." Light through glass is slower.

How do English people say light?

English people just say light but in an English accent

What travels at approximately 1117 million kilometres an hour?

Speed of light * * * * * Nothing, since the speed of light in vacuum is around 1080 million km/h. In any case, the "speed of light" does not travel!

Is anything has more speed than speed of light?

no, according to Einstein with his theory on relativity. The speed of light is what a lot of scientist say is the speed limit of the cosmos. In particle accelerators they can accelerate small pieces of matter close to the light speed but can never reach it. If you were to travel until you hit light speed it would require all the energy in the whole universe or you could say it would take an infinite amount of energy to reach light speed. The only way around this is the Einstein-Rose bridge otherwise called a wormhole. This is a possibility according to Einsteins equations.

What is the speed of light per planet?

The speed of light is the same for every observer everywhere. That is a fundamental tenet of the theory of special relativity (and everything based on it, such as the general theory of relativity and quantum field theory). To date no violation of the consistency of the speed of light has been measured. By the way, this does not say the speed of light is the maximum speed, just that the speed of light is constant, so the possible discovery of faster-than-light neutrinos does not invalidate this.
