When you tighten down the nut, to the torque specs, it'll push the pitman arm up onto the splines of the Power Steering pump, that's all you need to worry about it is getting it the right torgue

On some vehicles you do need a puller to remove the Pitman arm.
The intermediate steering shaft is sloppy. You can fix it with lube (requires installing a zerk) or replacing it with the upgraded version now available from GM.

You will have alot of play in the steering wheel.
Hey, you need to buy or rent a pitman arm puller. lock the steering wheel on center, remove pitman arm nut, then use the puller to release the pitman arm from the steering gearbox. make sure not to turn the steering wheel while unhooked from the pitman arm or you will damage the airbag clock spring in the steering wheel. good luck and be carfull ps, you may have to tighten the puller then tap the head of the screw on the puller then tighten then tap ect.

The pitman arm is the arm connected to the steering box sector shaft that moves side to side to steer the wheels.
ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE PITMAN ARM? MAYBE YOU MEAN THE IDLER ARM? THE PITMAN ARM IS RALREY EVER CHANGED. THIS IS THE ARM THAT CONNECTS THE STEERING LINKAGE TO THE POWER STEERING BOX. ITS AT THE BASE OF THE STEERING BOX , UNDER THE CAR, IT PROTRUDES FROM THE STEERING BOX SHAFT CONNECTING SAME TO THE CENTER LINK.
