∙ 14y agoBy the age of nine months a Shepherd with 'soft' ears should have gone erect by now, it is perfectly normal for it to never happen though.

∙ 12y agoTheir ears will perk up in their first 3-6 months, though it does depend. Some dogs don't develop enough cartilidge and bones in that amount of time.

German Shepherd's are born with naturally floppy ears as their cartilage in their ears has not yet developed enough to support them. Most German Shepherd's ears will stand up eventually, all though there are sometimes Dogs that retain their floppy ears. The vast majority, however, will have erect ears in time.

Never. There is no reason this should ever be done. It is inhumane and unnecessary. A schnauzers ears should be cropped between 6 and 10 weeks old, any later than that and your odds of them standing goes down. It is not necessary to have the cropped, however many show dogs still do this to keep the original look of the breed. The ears are usually completely heeled by 9 weeks of age if done at six weeks. It is a cosmetic surgery for dogs, just like many humans have things changed.

How do you get a German Shepherds ears to stand up?
Some ears simply need time to prick up on their own. However, if you are concerned that they will not stand on their own, there is a trick you can use. (Don't laugh.) Take tampon tubes and feed his ears into them. Then use adhesive tape to wrap the tubes and secure them in place. Remove the tubes every few days to let the ears breathe and check on their progress. Repeat as necessary.
