The 3,000 mile oil change was a necessity in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even in the early 90s. But today changing your oil/filter every 3,000 miles is a total waste of money and Natural Resources as you are just throwing away good oil. Some people remain attached to the 3,000 mile oil change and always say the same thing. Changing it every 3,000 must be better than changing it every 5,000. If that is the case then every 2,000 or 1,000 would be even better. Modern oil and filters are so much better than they were years ago that it is foolish to waste your money on a 3,000 mile oil change. Manufactures warranty their engines much longer than they did in the past so rest assured they would not recommend 5,000, 7,000, or even 10,000 mile oil change intervals if they thought there was a chance it would damage the engine they would have to replace. If you are a skeptic and hung in the 50s, you can send your engine oil to be analyzed. Blackstone Laboratories in Fort Wayne, Ind, will send you a free kit for oil and you send it back with $25 for an analysis. My advice is to follow the recommendations as listed in your owners manual and ignore anyone who tells you the 3,000 mile oil change is still needed. I change mine every 5,000 miles as recommended in my owners manual and I have over 200,000 mile on my 1999 Toyota with not one engine problem. It still runs like new.
