when they are bad the spark electrode will look like a smooth gradual point. it may take a very long time. With Toyota cars they need replaced with new NGK brand every 50,000 mi. but inspected every year.....Unfortunately,there is no single answer to this question. As spark plugs grow older, they lose their sharp edges as material from the center and ground electrodes is slowly eroded away. As the gap between these two points grows, the voltage required to bridge the gap increases proportionately. Even the best ignition systems will be strained to supply enough voltage to completely burn the fuel. It is at this point, when fuel is being left unburned, that the time has come to change spark plugs.Replacing worn out spark plugs with new ones (with sharp new edges) effectively restores the ignition system's efficiency. Misfires are reduced, power is restored, economy of operation is enhanced and emissions are reduced. The best guide is the manufacturer's recommendation for your vehicle, as this particular service varies from brand to brand and model to model. In the absence of this information or in conjunction with it, you can rely on the advice of a mechanic who is familiar with your type of vehicle. In the best of all worlds, this would be a mechanic who is also familiar with the vehicle you own. If you find a good mechanic, whether dealer or independent, stick with him. The better he knows your personal vehicle, the better he will be able to diagnose and service it. The end result is very much like a doctor-patient relationship and, in the long run, you will have a healthier vehicle.
Take it to a Toyota dealership
remove the plastic shrould-2 acorn nut,and 2 plastic clips-remove the coil for each plug-install new plugs-replace coils and shrould-go for a ride -your done.
Corollas has a four cylinder engine, it means it has 4 spark plugs.
In the cylinder head, on top of the engine block.
Disconnect the battery, remove the engine cowl, remove the spark plugs cables, boots and plugs on the drivers side of the engine, replace with new spark plugs and attach the boot and cables. Do the same on the passenger side of the engine, replace the engine cowl, and connect the battery.
remove the 2.4 liter engine cover (4 large bolts) disconnect any electrical conectors (these hook up to the coil packs) and lift it straight off the top of the engine remove the boots from the spark plugs (these should be replace) and the plugs should be fully visible
They are installed in holes in the engine block where the frost plugs are normally located
if engine has 4 plugs buy 4 if engine has 6 plugs buy six
yes, there's a huge sticker on your engine that says "use twin ground plugs retard"
Worn spark plugs would cause mis-firing or non firing cylinders, both are no good for the engine, replacing the plugs may stop the knock (Could also be a different problem) But you should replace spark plugs as soon as possible.
I think 0.32 is the gap for corolla 1996 with a 1.6 engine, whereas 0.36 for 1.8 engine. However, it is easier to pick pregapped plugs such as NGK, Bosch, etc.
