The Missouri Compromise of January 29, 1850 helped to avoid a major US crisis. Most national leaders to keep the Union together. In order to do so and admit states to the Union, the question of slavery was the issue.
Using the method of extending the southern border of Missouri, it was decided that states above this line were free states and those south of the line could be slave states. Also to be complete, the Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act. This act was designed to force runaway slaves back to the South. Money and-or penalties were associated with the act. Many Northerners were upset and the South was delighted.
