Easier to say when NOT to use overdrive - which is basically when pulling heavy loads and traveling in very hilly / mountainous areas.
You have to use it when you are driving in mountain areas where to have high speed is not a good idea. The overdrive function does allow the transmission to switch to higher gears.

On the valve cover but you need to use a mirror (like the ones that your dentist use when you go for a check-up). You will be seeing only a reflected image of the valve.
On a 1999 Mercury Cougar : Overdrive is the normally allowed position ( it won't shift into overdrive until the speed is faster anyway ) If you find that the transmission is frequently shifting between overdrive and drive ( such as hilly roads ) then it is best to use the transaxle ( transmission ) control switch on the side of your gear shifter to shut off the overdrive ( O/D OFF will appear in your gauge cluster )
I have an '01. I use this feature during slippery weather. I believe it starts the tranny in second gear to avoid rear wheel slipping.

Contact the dealer from where the Montero was originally purchased (new from showroom). Give them the Chasis number and they will provide you with the stereo lock code from their records. In-case the code is same for all 1997 Montero sports models then use the number 9613. This is the audio code of my Montero sport 1997 . Maybe it works in yours too! Good luck.
