Ford was the first company to use airbags. In 1971, Ford put air bags in an experimental fleet of cars. General Motors soon did the same thing, in '73, in an experimental Chevrolet fleet. Several people died while testing the safety of the fleet, and some of the deaths were blamed on the airbags.
In 1974, GM designed the Air Cushion Restraint System (ACRS), and made it a regular production option for full-size Cadillac, Buick, and Oldsmobile models. ACRS was the first supplemental inflatable restraint system to be offered to the general public. The option wasn't popular, so GM stopped offering it after 1976.
In 1980, Mercedes began offering airbags as an option for their high end S-class. In '84, the U.S. government mandated that all cars produced after 1989 be equipped with a passive restraint system; either airbags or automatic seatbelts. During the mid '80's Ford and Chrysler began offering driver's side airbags as optional equipment. In 1987, Porsche became the first manufacture to offer airbags as standard equipment. In 1990, Chrysler made them standard on all of their vehicles, except vans ('95).
In 1998, duel front airbags were made mandatory.
