At 21 Lincoln moved to New Salem, Illinois where he held several jobs and studied law. After getting his law license he moved to Springfield. He retired from the Illinois legislature after four terms and served one term in Congress from 1847-1849. At this point he devoted himself to his legal practice and became a important/prosperous attorney. The repeal of the Missouri Compromise in 1854 rekindled his political ambition and in 1858 he gained national attention from his debates with Douglas. So, his time as a full time working lawyer was very short.
