A private memorial service for Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, was held at the First Unitarian Church on December 23, 2008. After the memorial service, Barack Obama scattered Mrs. Dunham's ashes in the ocean at Lanai Lookout, the same spot where he had scattered his mother's ashes in 1995.
A community tribute service had been held at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2008, at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, where friends and Co-workers honored her. Neither President-elect Obama nor his sister, Maya Soetero-Ng, attended the event, which was sponsored by the bank where Dunham was a vice president. They contributed a letter that the bank chairman and CEO, Al Landon, read.
