Charlemagne became King of the Franks in 768. In 800 he was crowned Emperor of the West. He died in 814. During the time he was king, he brought almost all of the territiry of modern France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Germany, and much of the Netherlands, Austria, and Italy into his control, forming what was the most powerful political entity in Eurpoe of the time.
