King Charles 1 was beheaded in January 1649, and England became a Commonwealth, a de facto Republic. This amounted to the monarchy being overthrown, but only temporarily as Charles 11 was crowned King in 1661. However, after Charles return to England all legal documents were re-dated as if he had succeeded his father in 1649, so there is a case (with hindsight) that England's monarchy was never overthrown. But you wouldn't have wanted to say that to Oliver Cromwell!
