A:Although written in the second century BCE, this passage is set in the period soon after Persia defeated the Babylonians in 539 BCE. So, this scene takes place sometime around 530-520 BCE.

He was in there a little more than one night - plenty of time for the lions to eat him if God had let them as they were pretty hungry as we can see when we read the story, because Daniel's accusers plus their wives and children were thrown to the lions after Daniel was vindicated and the lions finished them all off before they reached the bottom of the den - there were 120 of them - not lions but accusers of Daniel. It doesn't say how many lions there were.

You can read about it in the book of Daniel, Ch. 6

A:Daniel chapter 6 says that Daniel was thrust into the role of second-in command of the entire Persian empire, and that jealous men conspired to have Daniel thrown into the den of lions, taking advantage of the well-known Persian code of morality in which a promise can not be broken. They had King Darius issue an edict that prevented anyone from any form of prayer, an edict which Daniel immediately broke.

Biblical scholars say that Daniel was an early Jewish novel, written approximately 167 BCE. It eventually became accepted as a genuine history of the Babylonian Exile, no doubt because of its strong theological content. Although the book gives Daniel an honoured place in Persian history, there is no mention of him in the history of Persia, and much of the book's interpretation of historical events is confused and contradicts what we know about the time. Thus, we can not look outside the Book of Daniel even to find clues as to when the author would have intended the account of the lion's den to have occurred. All we can say is that King Cyrus of Persia conquered Babylon in 539 BCE.

A:

The Book of Daniel describes Daniel being taken as a young child from Jerusalem to Babylon, where he was treated well and provided an education. He was a recognised interpreter of dreams and in time became the second most powerful person in the Babylonian Empire. After Persia defeated Babylon, Daniel once again became the second most powerful person in the empire, in spite of his previous involvement. Betrayed for following Judaism against the edict of the king, Daniel was placed in a den of lions, but survived untouched. The story therefore places this event during the early Persian period, some time after 539 BCE. However, scholars say the Book of Daniel was really a novel, written approximately 167 BCE. On that view, Daniel was only a character in the book and was never really thrown into the lions' den.

Tradition states that the Book of Daniel describes actual events (plus prophecies). Traditional chronology places the attempted killing of Daniel in about 390 BCE. Daniel's gravesite is known to this day, in Susa, Iran.
