Who is the discoverer of the south eastern side of Canada? It is Jacques Cartier. Cartier was born in St. Malo, France. People today don=t know anything else about his childhood. Cartier traveled to Canada three times in his lifetime. The first time was in 1534. He only discovered the shores of Canada and kidnaped the Iroquoian Indian chiefs sons. The second time was in 1535-1536. This is when his crew fell ill with scurvy, and an Indian boy told him about a tree herb that would cure scurvy. Cartier also kidnaped the chief himself. The third time Cartier set sail was in 1541-1542. He had to wait a few years before sailing again because a war started in France. This time instead of searching for a route to Asia, he searched for precious metals. He actually sailed back with iron pyrites and quartz crystals which he thought to be gold and diamonds. These were his three voyages to Canada.
Because Cartier traveled to Canada three times, he discovered many things. A few things he discovered were: Iroquoian Indians, the disease scurvy, and rumors of valuable metals. He also found a cure for scurvy and harsh winters. To Cartier=s delight he also found some iron pyrites and quartz crystals which he though to be gold and diamonds. Did Cartier discover what he was looking for? No, yet people don=t think of him as a failure. Why not? Because he did discover many important facts about Canada and its geography of the land and valuable or precious metals. He also didn=t discover the route to Asia, although he did believe that he had. Cartier picked the curiosity of French inhabitants, yet Canada would have to wait several years before more French explores ventured into this vast country. Sadly, on September 1,1557 this great explorer died at age 66 of an epidemic.
So, we now classify Jacques Cartier as the discoverer of Canada. He discovered many things and he ventured into the unknown. Yet, even though he failed to find the kings wish, he still known today. He is recognized by the beautiful statue, grand bridge, and major street named after him.
