He was murdered at a party by three members of his former group, the Nation of Islam, in early 1965. While standing up to make a speech, a fight broke out in the audience (it was actually staged to distract Malcolm X during the assassination). Three members then came out and fired several gun shots at him; he was reportedly dead before he hit the ground. Malcolm X had been the key spokesman for the Nation of Islam, a group of extremist Black American Muslims, but had fallen out with them the previous year.

After converting to and later leaving the Nation of Islam and becoming Muslim, Malcolm X received death threats from Islamic sects and was eventually assassinated in 1965.
