Demeter was one of six children born to the Titans Cronus and Rhea. A prophecy stated that one of Cronus's children would grow to overthrow him as he did his own father, Uranus. Each time that his wife gave birth, Cronus ripped the newborn god from her and swallowed it whole. Upon the birth of her sixth child, Zeus, Rhea had the infant taken away and hidden. In its place, she gave Cronus a stone wrapped in blankets which the Titan swallowed without a second thought. Zeus grew to adulthood in secrecy and returned to confront his father. He forced Cronus to regurgitate his siblings and with them established a ruling class of gods.
