In 1707 the Parliaments of Scotland and England merged and in 1801 the Irish parliament joined them. The full name of the country as recognized at the United Nations is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' and this includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The citizens of these four places are British in international law.

England slowly took dominion over Wales over the 12th and 13th centuries, and formally annexed her in 1535. Following many wars where Scotland fought for her independence, England and Scotland were united on a reasonably equitable basis in 1707. These countries form Great Britain.

Ireland was conquered and subjugated by the British over a prolonged period, and formally became part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in an act of union in 1801. Following acts of home rule and uprisings against British rule, Ireland declared independence in 1919, and this was finally recognised in 1922. The largely protestant north of Ireland ('Ulster') remained under British control, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and has remained so until this day.

On 1 May 1707, the Kingdom of Great Britain was created by the union of the Kingdom of England (which included Wales) and the Kingdom of Scotland.

Almost a century later, the Kingdom of Ireland, already under English control by 1691, merged with the Kingdom of Great Britain to form the United Kingdom with the passing of the Act of Union of 1800.

The Kingdom of England had largely existed before the Norman Conquest of 1066; with the Principality of Wales invaded soon after.

The Kingdom of England (now including Ireland) shared a monarch with the Kingdom of Scotland from 1603.

After the English Civil War the Commonwealth of England briefly existed,

1649-1660. The Commonwealth of England was a republic.

After the restoration things pretty much returned to as before with regard to political entities. In 1707 an Act of Unio was made with joined the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Scotland in a political union called The United Kingdom of Great Britain.

In 1800 Ireland joined the union thus forming The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

In 1923, some of Ireland left the Union to form the Republic of Ireland. Since that time, the United Kingsom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has existed consisting of England (a kingdom), Wales (a principality), Scotland (a kingdom), and Northern Ireland (a province).
