When John Adams and his wife moved into the White House in 1800 ( called the President's House, then) it was not completed. Abigail Adams hung her laundry in the East Room.
Though not completed, John Adams, the second President was the first to inhabit the White House. The first president to have lived in the white house would have to be President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved into the White House in 1800, shortly before it was completed. Construction began in 1792.
George Washington was elected and took the oath of office in 1789. Although President Washington was instrumental in picking the site of the new White House, he never lived there. The new Executive Mansion was completed in 1800 and the first resident of the White House was John Adams.
Construction began when the first cornerstone was laid in October of 1792. Although President George Washington oversaw the construction of the house, he never lived in it. It was not until 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that its first residents, President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved in.
The president lived in the white house and plants lived in the green house
Actually, Washington never lived in the White House or saw it after it was completed. He certainly had horses to ride and to pull his carriage where he lived as President. He was a big man- I do not know why would keep a pony.

John Adams and his wife were the first to live in White House and they lived there for about three months moving in, in November. so one would think they did some decorating. They may have done some special decoration for Christmas . The next occupant Jefferson, lived there eight years and he saw the interior completed. See the related question for information about White House Christmas trees.
Thomas Jefferson
James Buchanan
John Adams was the first. He lived there for about 4 months at the end of his term.
