The Confederate fleet was enlarged on April 17, 1861. Near Indianola, Texas, the Star of the West was captured. This was the vessel that had made an attempt to resupply Fort Sumter earlier in the the year.
In January of 1861, the now famous merchant ship, Star of the West was headed south to bring supplies to Fort Sumter in the Charleston South Carolina harbor. The ship was turned back after receiving cannon fire from the military college of VMI on the Virginia coast. Later in April, the Star of the West was captured by the Confederates off the shore of Texas.

The Star of the West was the US cargo ship that President Buchanan sent to Fort Sumter to resupply the forts dwindling provisions. It was not trying to deliver weapons or reinforcements. When it reached the Charleston harbor, the Confederates fired upon it and the ship retreated. Later, in the US Civil War, the ship was captured by the Confederates in a port in Texas.

West Virginia was a part of Virginia until after the Civil War started, so technically at the start of the war what would become West Virginia was in the Confederacy. However, West Virginia separated itself form Virginia to join the Union as a free state, so West Virginia was aligned with the North after it came to exist as a separate political entity from Virginia.

It was his rail link with the rest of the Confederacy. When the Union troops captured Five Forks, Lee had to abandon his position at Petersburg. It was the end of the long siege, and Lee fled West, to be stopped at Appomattox, where he surrendered.

Union General George Archibald McCall graduated from West Point in 1822. He was ranked 26th among his graduating class of 40 cadets. McCall served in the Peninsula campaign and was wounded and captured. Due to bad health and age he was released from prison by the Confederacy.
