Whilst there have been many variations of the sewing machine through the years, credit is generally given to Elias Howe. Elias Howe was employed in a machinist's shop, where he had the opportunity to experiment with inventing a sewing machine. He successfully demonstrated his first sewing machine in 1846, and patented his lockstitch sewing machine on 10 September 1846 in New Hartford, Connecticut.
Howe faced a legal battle after Isaac Singer invented the up-and-down motion mechanism, and Allen Wilson developed a rotary hook shuttle, both filing for patents. After winning one suit, the three inventors pooled their patent rights in the Sewing Machine Combination. It was under this patent that the sewing machine was then successfully marketed.
There have been a number of other dates and places when variations of the sewing machine have been developed. They include:
Singer in the 1850s, built the first commercially successful machine using the lock stitch which was already patented.
The first successful sewing machine was invented in the year 1830. It was invented by a Frenchman named Barthelemy Thimonnier. The design consisted of a chain stitch made of a single thread and needle. It could make straight seams. Barthelemy Thimonnier was a tailor himself but built 80 machines for his business. While the machine was praised by the press and others (even winning a prize at the World's Fair) it was still a bit ahead of it's time, and did not catch on with the general public at that time. Thimonnier obtained patents for improvements in the machine in 1841, 1845, and 1847, but nonetheless died in poverty at the age of 64 in 1857. He did not, as one legend states, get killed in a riot by other tailors who were afraid his machine would cost them their jobs. His original factory was burned down, and it was suspected that it was arson, but was never proven.
The first sewing machine was invented in the United States by Walter Hunt from New York. Hunt never obtained a patent.
Later, Elias Howe, from Massachusetts, invented the first automatic sewing machine. Howe did receive a patent for his invention.
The first sewing machine that actually worked was in the 1830s.
In 1818, the first American sewing machine was invented by John Adams Doge & John Knowles.
Thomas Saint first had the idea of creating a sewing machine in 1790
The earliest inventor of a mechanical sewing device was probably Charles Weisenthal, a German inventor who was awarded a patent in 1755
Eli Stawkhand
the sewing machine impacted America and New York because if the sewing machine was never invented, we would still be at the basics of making clothes. The need for clothing was needed for soldiers during the Civil War increased the use of the sewing machine in both factories and homes.
theory of sewing machine
The sewing machine with the foot pedal, also called a foot treadle, was invented by Elias Howe, Jr. Howe was born in Spencer, Massachusetts in July of 1819. He started out working at a textile factory.
Not all sewing machines are compound machines. The definition of a compound machine is one the contains more than one machine within the same case. A machine that is not only a sewing machine but also an embroidery machine would be considered a compound sewing machine. A really good compound sewing machine is the Husqvarna Diamond sewing machine.

If by "olden days" you're referring to prior to 1846 (when the sewing machine was invented), there was no sewing machine. All sewing was done by hand.

Then we probably would not have the sewing machine. The sewing machine is a rise up of the spinning wheel.
