The 14th Amendment in 1868 gave the feed slaves the right to vote, but after Reconstruction ended, many Southern states imposed several onerous restrictions, effective blocking most African Americans from exercising that right. The Voting Rights Act of 1964 removed those restrictions.

Blacks were finally allowed to vote in 1965. This was over 100 years since the Civil War ended. John F. Kennedy wrote a Civil rights act in 1964 to help the blacks to vote.

Why had blacks been deprived of the right to vote?

Because blacks were brought to this country as slaves, and even though the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery, the Civil Rights movement had to happen before whites and authorities were able to accept them as equals.

The Jim crow laws were intended to do what?

They were made so that the democratic party could still stay in power. Because if they (the south) were to allow the blacks to vote, they would most assuredly vote for the republicans. It was not only about keeping blacks down, but also a way for democrats to have the power.

What did grandfather clauses mean to African Americans who wanted vote?

They could not vote if their grandfather had not been allowed to vote.

How did the voter qualification change between 1800 and the mid 1820s?

Despite the nation's growing democratic spirit, a great many Americans did not have the right to vote. They included women, Native Americans, and the vast majority of African Americans. Slaves had no political rights at all. Most northern states had allowed free African American men to vote. In the 1820s, many of these states took away that right. By 1830, only a few New England states permitted African American men to vote on equal terms with white men. In New York, African American men had to own property in order to vote, but white men didn't.

The new black codes allowed the blacks to do what five things?

The Southern black codes most restricted the rights of freed slaves. However, a few things they allowed were the rights to own property, make contracts, keep the money they earned, use the legal system, and have protection under the law.
