This myth originated universally from the time humans were able to speak with each other. Reptiles are things that we are inherrently afraid of due to their nature of beins so different from us, and that many of them are terribly dangerous to encounter due to poisons, the emthods they eat, and our relative inability to defend against them (like alligators or anacondas)
It is one of the wonders of natural evolution of our species that Homo Sapiens all, universally formed some form of this myth. But to pinpoint an exact date would be tragically impossible. People have been afraid of giant reptiles since they first encountered alligators, crocodiles, and stumbled across the fossils of huge dinosaurs. Good luck to anyone researching this exact question....dragons pre-date the epic of Gilgamesh (one of the earliest written documents) and Beowulf (the oldest document written in English)
Unless you are referring to Kimono dragons, which live in South East Asia; Dragons are entirely fictional and never ever lived anywhere. Perhaps people found dinosaur bones and thought they were still around, perhaps they had a fear of the unknown and dreamed up dragons. Maybe they saw something, like a crocodile, and got the idea of dragons that way.
There are tiny populations of dragons still left in the world, if you don't believe me then that's your choice, BUT:
Technically speaking, dragons came into this world AFTER dinosaurs (despite the stereotype, they don't like violence) but before humans. They watched us for centuries and as payment we almost wiped them out in the Middle Ages and said it was because they were evil. The worst they did was steal cattle out of starvation.
If you want an answer for your question directly: The Middle Ages.
Dragons are fictitious creatures and therefore they have never been borne.

By being born the year of the Dragon, one of those years was 2000! I was born the year of the Dragon and if I were any kind of animal, I would defiantly be a Dragon, just because Dragons are my life and I'm all about DRAGONS!
