Embedded audio refers to a technique of inserting audio data into a video signal. It is commonly used in broadcast environments and makes for a very convenient connection. One cable carries video, audio, closed caption data and more. It means that data cannot get lost on the way and it is harder for a station engineer to patch the wrong audio to a channel by mistake. HD signals have sufficient spare capacity to carry up to 8 audio channels.

There are times when this auxiliary data needs to be stripped from the video signal and routed separately. Here are a few reasons why:

Standards conversion:

When changing a signal from a 60Hz US version to a 50H European version, the audio data that was attached to each frame of the image will be lost. The frames are actually re-generated at a new frame rate so the audio needs to be inserted once again to fit the new frame rate. The same applies to 50Hz to 60Hz conversion.

Vision mixing.

In live production, video signals normally pass through at least one switcher or vision mixer. Because a typical switcher can have up to 96 separate video inputs, audio embedded in one signal may not be required at the output. All audio is normally extracted, processed and re-inserted after the video processing has been done.

File processing

Embedded audio is also found in video files. Once again, a single file can carry all the data required but any process carried out on either the video or audio components will require the two signals to be separated.

Can television broadcasts split visual sound signals carrying pictures on am and sound on FM?

Television broadcasts are now almost exclusively digital. Video, audio and other information are broadcast as a single data stream so there is no requirement nor an option to split the signals. In the days of analog broadcasting, the audio signal was commonly broadcast as a separate signal using a related transmission frequency.
