When you put your 89 Chevy into drive it will not move and when you put it back into park the trany grinds what could this be?

Could be a broken 1/2 shaft or inner cv joint. Sounds like the transmission is moving the inner part of the 1/2 shaft but the outer is not moving, so when you put vehicle in "Park" you are stopping the inner part of the 1/2 shaft.

Probably the trany cooler in the rad has let go. If this is the case then the coolant is in the trany also. check the trany for coolant and if it is you will need a trany very soon. I've tried flushing the trany when this has happened in the past and have yet to save a trany. Usually within 3-6 week the trany stops working.
Why does my automatic only drive in reverse?
Your transmission needs to be rebuilt ... although - once - I "fixed" that problem by draining & refilling my trany.
