He lived there for four years, and then returned to Hawaii for the rest of his childhood and youth, living with his grandparents in Honolulu until he finished high school and left for college in Los Angeles.

His dad soon abandoned the family and after getting a divorce, his mom re-married. Barack moved to Indonesia with his mom and new step-dad Lolo Soetoro; Barack remained there for four years, attending a Catholic school and then a public school. He then returned to Hawaii, where he was raised by his grandparents and attended the Punahou School, an elite private school. He has written that his childhood was happy and that it was interesting to see a different culture for a couple of years; he learned a lot from being there, but was glad to get back to the U.S.

∙ 11y agoBarack Obama was born in Hawaii and lived there till he was five, when his mom remarried and the family moved to Indonesia (where his step-dad was from). In Indonesia, young Barack attended a Catholic elementary school and then a public school. But his mom felt the schools were not what she had hoped for, so Barack returned to Hawaii to live with his grandparents and attend school in Honolulu.
From grade five to grade twelve, he attended the Punahou School, considered one of Hawaii's best. He graduated from there in 1979 and then went to college, first in Los Angeles at Occidental, and then in New York at Columbia, where he graduated in 1983. After working for 5 years, he returned to college, getting a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1991.
