The Axial Age is a term used for the period of about 200 years either side of 500 BCE. It was a period of momentous religious and philosophical development across the world, from Greece to China.
Some of the developments widely attributed to this period include the emergence of Platonism (Greece), the emergence of monotheistic Judaism (Judah), the spread of Zoroastrianism, developments in Hinduism (India), emergence of Buddhism (India), Confucianism and Daoism (China). The founding of Zoroastrianism was once also placed in this period, but it is now generally recognised as being much older.
The axial age, spanning from around 800-200 BCE, saw the emergence of key social philosophies such as Buddhism, Confucianism, and Stoicism. These philosophies emphasized ethical principles, social harmony, and individual morality, influencing the development of social norms and structures. The axial age thinkers also questioned traditional beliefs and sought new ways to understand human existence within the context of society.
