-There are about seven (7) casting/freeze/welsh plugs on Jeep 4.0 I-6 engines. I say "about" because I haven't examined every model year.
-On my engine there are five on the manifold side and two on the rear of the block. None are exactly easy to get at as the manifolds have to be pulled. I've read some Jeep forum articles that suggest removing the driver side fender for more working room; this makes sense.
-The two plugs in the rear are the biggest problem as they are extremely difficult to reach without pulling the engine or removing the bell housing and raising the engine.
-Three cautions: 1) the plug area must be absolutely clean before installing the new plug. 2) watch for leaks. Sometimes the plugs appear to have gone in perfectly but will fool you; this happened to me. 3) if you have the closed (Jeep calls it "open") cooling system without a radiator cap, make sure that the cooling system is purged of air ("burped") and full of coolant.
