Wherever there are deep beds of limestone of suitable structural integrity, in landscapes and climates offering suitable, long-term, hydrological conditions for cave development. Such areas are found in many areas of the world: Europe, N & S America, parts of Africa and the Middle East, and Asia all have major cave-bearing limestone regions.
The rocks around Jenolan Caves are predominantly limestone, formed from ancient marine sedimentation. These rocks exhibit distinctive features such as cave formations due to the erosion by underground water over millions of years. Additionally, there are also dolomite and shale rocks present in the area surrounding the caves.
