Religious cardinals in the Catholic tradition are bishops who have been given this special title and position in the hierarchy of the Church. It is bestowed by the pope on bishops who have done outstanding work or who hold certain positions such as heads of Vatican offices, or bishops of certain dioceses such as Chicago, New York, Los Angelos etc. The only specific task of the College of Cardinals (all who are under 80 years of age from around the world) is to elect the next pope when the the pope dies.

There are a number of cardinals working in the Vatican curia but most are found in their home countries around the world and work as archbishops in their appointed archdioceses.
