Rhodospirillum rubrum is a purple non-sulfur bacteria. It most easily is found in marine environments, which may range from ponds, to brackish ditches and even sewage. It also may be found in mud and moist soil as long as there is some access to light, for carrying out photosynthesis. The bacteria is distinct, for its nitrogen fixing abilities, whereby it processes present but inaccessible nitrogen, into soluble and therefore accessible nitrogen. Another distinction is its cooperation with culturing anaerobically in the absence of light; or culturing aerobically in the presence of light, and thereby losing its hallmark purple color.

What is the symbiotic relationship legume plants and rhizobium bacteria?

The bacteria live in the plant cells, located on the root, and form nodules. These nodules convert nitrogen gas in the soil to usable energy for the plant. In return, the bacteria have a safe place to live and reproduce.

What is the relationship between the rhizobium and soybean plants?

Yes, a bacterium known as rhizobium lives inside special nodules on the roots of soybeans and other legumes. Rhizobium is able to take gaseous nitrogen from the atmosphere and turn it into an organic form, which can be use by the plant. The bacteria gets a safe place to live inside the plant and the plant gets nitrogen from the bacteria.
