There have been remains of frozen peoples, which are usually found in parts of Eastern Europe, but tattooing as it is known today comes from the Pacific Islands and Asia. It was the Samoans and Maori that the English and Europeans encountered whom tattooed their bodies heavily using a method known as Hand Tapping wherein a cluster of needles will be bound to a wooden rod and this rod will then in turn be struck by another wooden rod repeatedly which will build up the ink on your skin. This is still a highly practiced form of tattooing today within the Samoan and Maori people and has been adapted by a good number of Western and European artists as well. It was the art that the sailors saw on these people that inspired them to start getting tattooed, and this was strengthened heavily when these same sailors came in contact with the Asian and Japanese peoples who also tattooed themselves heavily, albeit in secret locations usually, and they had a much more refined method of tattooing known as Tebori, or more commonly, Hand Poke.
