The Israelites were a Semitic race, closely related to the Palestinians and Arabs, and were therefore brown-skinned. There never were any "black Israelites". However, converts to Judaism have added variety to the racial characteristics of the modern Jewish population, and this includes the black Ethiopian Jews.

Just as today, Israelites came in differing skin-tones, heights, and body-types. Our tradition is that the twelve sons of Jacob (the 12 Tribes) were not completely similar to each other in appearance, though none of them was really dark-skinned (Rashi commentary on Genesis 12:11). The Israelites sojourned in Egypt, but that proves nothing concerning their skin color, since they did not "mix" (have sexual relations) with the Egyptians (Rashi commentary, Numbers ch.26).

Abraham and Sarah came from southern Iraq and their wider family from northern Iraq. Since DNA tests have shown that Jews intermarried infrequently throughout history, Abraham and his Israelite descendants, including Moses, probably looked like Jews today.
DNA testing of Jewish communities worldwide has shown that they are all interrelated and of Middle Eastern genetics, comparable to the Sephardim today (not African or Egyptian).
In 2000, the analysis of a report by Nicholas Wade "provided genetic witness that Jewish communities have, to a remarkable extent, retained their biological identity separate from their host populations, evidence of relatively little intermarriage or conversion into Judaism over the centuries. The results accord with Jewish history and tradition." (See: What race were the Israelites?)

The only exception to this is the Ethiopian Jews, who show only a trace of DNA connection to other Jewish communities. Western ethnologists today hold the view that the Jews of Gondar (Ethiopia) either emerged from a Judaizing strain among Ethiopian Christians, or were converted by Yemeni Jews who crossed the Red Sea. A study by Professors Lucotte and Smets has shown that the genetic father of Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews) was close to the Ethiopian non-Jewish populations. This is consistent with the theory that Beta Israel are descendants of ancient inhabitants of Ethiopia, not the Middle East. Hammer et al. in 2000, and the team of Shen in 2004, arrive at similar conclusions, namely that the DNA of the Ethiopian Jews probably indicates a conversion of local populations. It has been estimated that this happened some 2,000 years ago.

What happened to the original black Jews?

There was no such thing. Abraham himself came from Western Asia, and since Jews have intermarried very little in the last 3800 years, he probably looked like Jews today. DNA testing of Jewish communities worldwide has shown that they are all interrelated and of Middle Eastern genetics, comparable to the Sephardim today (not African or Egyptian). The claim that Black Israelite churches make that the Israelites were an African people is without historical evidence. Most secular historians concur that the Jews of today are the descendants of the Ancient Israelites.

How can Israelites descend from Adam and Eve when the Israelites were black?

First, an important point to clarify, according to the Torah, every single humanon earth, regardless of skin colour, descended from Adam and Chava (Eve),not just the Israelites. The Torah does not specify the skin colour of Adam andChava so it is pointless to guess what colour they might have been.Second, there is no basis for the claim that the Israelites were black as theydid not come from Africa but rather, from what is referred to as the Middle Easttoday. The original core group of Israelites would have had an olive skin tone.Neither the Tanach (Jewish Bible) or science supports the idea that the Israeliteswere black. And if you have trouble with this answer and still need to believe that the"Israelites" were black, then there's a simple way to settle all of the disturbinguncertainty in your question. All you have to do is relax your mind and acceptthe fact that Adam and Eve were black.Answer:It is because Adam and Eve were black, themselves, so there wasn't adifference in color between them and their more distant descendants, through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Israelites.

If the Jewish people originated in Northern Africa is it true then that African Americans are descendants of the original Israelites?

Well, there's no such thing as "original Israelites"; the Israelites still are the same people, but not always recognized as such. However, even if one isn't born an Israelite, they can still be one of His people if they keep His statutes and obey His commandments. Those considered African Americans are certainly descendants of Israelites of past. (Considered is stressed because Israelites were not Africans just because they had dark skin colors.)
