On the 2000-2005 IS 300 there are four oxygen sensors that are mounted at four different points. One is at the bottom of the exhaust manifold, another is about a foot below that on the exhaust pipe and is fairly hard to reach from the top. I suggest accessing this one from the bottom by jacking the car up to an adequate height to facilitate access, and setting it down on to properly rated jack stands.Unfortunately the engineers at Toyota decided to put one sensor under the front passenger seat along the transmission hump which requires removing the front passenger seat to access a port capped with a rubber plug. The real problem is how do you know which sensor is the bad one? Without the computer diagnostic equipment of Lexus qualified shop you have know way to know.

My recommendation is to have a non-dealership Lexus qualified shop diagnose the bad sensor first to see if you will want to tackle the repair yourself. You should not pay more than $100 for a diagnostic evaluation, and some folks will do it for as little as $65. Then check eBay for sensors which will typically be half the price or less of the dealers price. Buy from vendors with a 99%-100% rating, and use Pay-Pal. If the sensor under the passenger seat is determined to be the bad one undo the four bolts, disconnect the power wires at the clip on the cord bundle, remove the seat, then lift up the floor mat to reveal the rubber plug. Remove the plug, carefully detach the sensors wire being careful not to damage the rubber cap the wire runs through, then using a deep socket, or socket and extension, remove the sensor and replace. The entire process of removal and replacement will take about an hour for someone who is mechanically inclined with proper tools, or two hours or more for a novice.

Lexus dealers typically charge $250-$400 just for labor for that hard to get at sensor. Add the price of the sensor and your closer to $400-$550.
