First off, the timing marks as per Haynes Manual are off the wall. Use this method as follows. Turn the camshaft with a spanner until notch on cam lines up with 'notch' on case-located approx at 9.00 o'clock position. Now look at groove on crankshaft, this should be lined up(within an inch) with the 'elbow' or 'apex' on the web casing, located at approx 10.00 oclock. If this mark is out by 360deg then you have to go around again with the spanner on the camshaft until the 2 timing marks nearly line up. Having done this you now have an approx position of the marks!! Next, take out no. 1 cylinder spark plug and pop in a slender screwdriver. Again turn the camshaft an inch or two, forwards and backwards until you get the exact position at which the screwdriver rises and then begins to fall-this is the TDC point(takes a little practise). Next pop out the rubber grommet on the gearbox bellhousing and you will see (use a torch) the flywheel mark lining up with indicator. You can now finely adjust the camshaft until the marks on the flywheel align perfectly. Next job is to remove the high tension electrical gizmo located on the back side of the camshaft. After this is removed you will be able to see the end of the camshaft with a horizontal slot running through it -this slot must be perfectly horizontal with the cylinder head casing-if it is not then your timing is out and you will have to adjust the timing belt on the camshaft accordingly. I think if anything it should probably done at 60K miles, which was the case of my Punto and also my current car (although not a Fiat). I would suggest getting it done as soon as you can, if it snaps you can wave bye bye to your engine!
