There are two types of head gear in the service: helmets and soft caps. If you want a helmet, with original markings on it, then be prepared to pay a healthy fee for it, it's considered a collectible item. If no insignia is on it, surplus stores (on line) sell decals for the helmets. The soft caps can be purchased and have patches sewn on them. The US Army seldom (if ever) issued soft caps with patches sewn on them; normally the only item authorized on a US Army soft cap was the rank insignia. GI's normally obtained items on their own, and had local shops sew them on their caps.
