For a good general reading about the Civil War and the battles, I would highly recommend the TIME-LIFE history series. This was printed in several volumes that deals with various battles or campaigns. These books are well written and illustrated with maps and photos. Also, you can usually find a few volumes of this series in your local library. An ole classic that could always be found in school or local libraries is the American Heritage book called "The Civil War" that was written by Bruce Catton and James M. McPherson (Viking Press). This is a large book that is full of information. It featured a bird's-eye sketch of the battle field that included soldiers in minute detail.
