Well, seeing as he was a Mathematician and Astronomer, he is closely related to the Solar System. During the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century Johannes Kepler discovered and documented the laws of planetary motion. His studies also laid the groundwork for Isaac Newton's theory of universal gravitation.

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Johannes Kepler.
Johannes KeplerHis first two laws were published in Astronomia Nova(The New Astronomy) in 1609. His Third Law was published in 1618, in book five of his Harmonices Mundi (The Harmonies of the World.)

Yohaans Keppler.
One of the early "Greats" of astronomy, Keppler developed the Laws of Planetary Motion.

Johannes Keppler was an astronomer (1571-1630), who is remembered most for his laws of planetary motion, which are still valid today. See the related links below for more information.
The period can refer to one of two things: the planets rotation about its axis (how long its day is) and the rotation around its star (how long its year is).
Johannes Kepler made that suggestion, which was confirmed later when Newton's discoveries showed why an object will move in an ellipse under the inverse-square force of gravity.
