The serial number is on the bottom left of the engine. It is sorta behing the frame. difficult to see.
You will find the engine number on the 85 BMW 323i on the driver's side of the engine block. Using a flashlight will help you see it better.

1975 280 SE w116 engine number can be seen in between the engine block and distrubuter. It can be covered with dirt and it may be hard to see. To reach and clean it you should open the distributer cap.

That could be a number of things. When the check engine/service engine light comes on that means the ECM / engine control module see's a problem with the emission system. You will need to have the engine scanned with an OBDII engine scanner to see what caused it to come on. Some parts stores will do that for free, like advance auto parts.
The number is stamped on the back of the engine behind the driver side head on a flat deck were the transmission bolts up to the engine. You can see the "casting number" with an inspection mirror. On some later model engines the last 3 numbers are stamped between the freeze plugs on the side of the engine.
