Contrary to the popular story, there is no historical evidence that Betwy Ross designed a U. S. flag. There are receipts showing that she did sew some flags for the Navy.

What was the phrase Don't Tread on Me?

Don't Tread on Me Flag (Gadsden Flag)First flown aboard a Colonial Troop ship on January 4th, 1776This was the flag of the American Colonies at the time of the American Revolution against England. It features a rattlesnake above the warning, "DON'T TREAD ON ME". The rattlesnake had become a traditional symbol of the American Colonies. The most obvious reason for this is that the rattlesnake was only found in the American Colonies (and in abundance, to the dismay of settlers) and nowhere else in the world. The origin of the slogan (Don't Tread On Me) pertains to the snake's deadly strike and the idea that it is best to leave them alone. The snake on the flag is also roughly arranged in the shape of the American Colonies with the tip of the tail being the Florida peninsula and the head being New England.Because of its connection with the original intention of the U.S. Constitution and the freedoms sought by the American Revolutionaries, this Flag has been informally adopted by many Libertarians and those seeking strict interpretations of the U.S. Constitution.Viper1The flag is still flown on the Jack Staff of all U.S. Navy ships during a time of conflict.

Who created the American flag design?

We do not know who designed the first American flag. There have been many historians who have researched this question, and none has been able to come up with a definitive answer. The idea that Betsy Ross designed the flag seems to have appeared for the first time at about the time of the Centenary Celebrations, in 1876, a hundred years after the flag first appeared. There are many people who have been suggested as the first designer, but there is no hard historical evidence to support any of them. The first description of the design came from the Maritime Committee of the Second Continental Congress, in 1777, but this seems to have been a formal adoption of an already extant design from an unknown source. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, on a motion from John Adams, adopted the stars and stripes as the national flag. History leaves its students with very few clues as to who designed and created the original flag, but it has been long attributed to the Philadelphia seamstress and upholsterer. So widely accepted is the story of this legendary flagmaker, the United States government issued a commemorative postage stamp in 1952 in celebration of the two hundredth anniversary of her birth.Betsy Ross did NOT make the first flag of the United States of America.Mary Pickersgill made the large flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812. This 15-star, 15-stripe flag is the one that Francis Scott Key saw on the morning of September 14, 1814 after an all night British bombardment. He penned the poem "In Defense of Fort McHenry" which later became our National Anthem. This "Star Spangled Banner" is on display in the Smithsonian institution Museum in Washington, DC. - the original flag from the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812.A technicality: Our flag is NOT the "American flag"... it is the flag of the United States of America. All of the countries in North America, Central America, and South America have their own national flags. They too would be "American flags."

What was Betsy rosss family like?

Betsy Ross's family was caring and loving the only time they weren't supportive was when she married John Ross. It was because Betsy was a Quaker which was her culture but John wasn't so her parents wanted her to marry someone who was a Quaker. But Betsy didn't like that idea because she was in love with John. Betsy sister was supportive though because she was already married she had married a sailor and he sailed Betsy and John to the other side of the river to get married so that's just what they did.

Whose idea was it to make the US flag?

The first flag was made for the Navy in 1776 and was NOT made by Ross. The story we know was made up by her grandchildren after she died. Francis Hopkins is given credit for the Navy flag and has been recognized by Congress for it.

What is the history of Malaysia flag?

The flag of Malaysia, which was first raised on September 16, 1963, originated from the flag of the Federation of Malaya. After the British started to collectively administer the eleven states of Malaya as a single entity, the idea of having a national flag was mooted. Prior to that, each state in Malaya had its own flag, many of which are unchanged in design to this very day.
