∙ 15y agoHand-held cameras go back as far as the 1850's at which time there were several available. Thomas Skaife may have been first with a camera he designed in 1858, along with a redesigned version from 1859 that he named the Pistolgraph. Roll film also dates to the 1850's. Melhuish designed a rollholder in 1854 which carried strips of sensitized paper, and there were several other early forms. Warnerke was producing a paper-based stripping film similar to Eastman's as early as 1875 in London. Eastman's rollfilm was the first to enjoy commercial success, but certainly not the first of its kind. The first rolled celluloid films were invented by Hannibal Goodwin, who applied for a patent in 1887, though it was many years before it was granted, due to interferences entered by Eastman Kodak. The rollfilm paper-backing system that permitted daylight loading was invented by Samuel N. Turner. Eastman first licensed the system, then purchased Turner's Boston Camera Manufacturing Company in 1895 to acquire the rights (this was the second Boston Camera Company started by Turner. The Bullseye Camera produced by this company was the first designed expressly for paper-backed rollfilm with frame positioning numbers on the paper backing, and was continued by Kodak as the Kodak Bullseye.).

He invented a particular hand-held camera that required nothing more of the user than to point it and push the button, and he established the first commercial processing facilities to eliminate the need for the user to have his own darkroom. The first hand-held Eastman camera was the Eastman-Cossett Detective Camera of 1886, but it proved to be too expensive to manufacture, so only a few were produced. The first Kodak camera was introduced in 1888, and was an immediate success, in spite of the very high initial cost of $25 for the camera, and $10 to process the 100-image roll and reload the camera.

In the very early days one coudln't change the film oneself. One had to send the camera to the Kodak Company (in Rochester NY). The developed the flim, made prints, inserted new film for 100 shots and returned the whole lot to the sender. (The Kodak Brownie was introduced in 1900). Incidentally, the invention of roll film was essential for the development of motion pictures.
