The plot of "Romeo and Juliet" is based on an Italian tale transformed into Verse by Arthur Brooke as "The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet" in 1562. It was also retold in prose by William Painter as "Palace of Pleasure" in 1582.
Shakespeare got the story of Romeo and Juliet from a long poem written by Arthur Brooke. It was called "The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet" and was published in 1562. Brooke himself had stolen the story from an Italian source.

Shakespeare borrowed most of his plots from history books, other plays, poetry and stories. For his characters, Shakespeare got his ideas mainly from himself. He did have influences through out his writing, but his ideas, and the form of compassion he wrote with made him one of the best writers in History.

Shakespeare also got his ideas mostly from books he had read. Holinshed's Chronicles and Plutarch's lives were big sources for him. Sometimes he got his ideas from older plays; there was an older Hamlet for example.

Some of his ideas, like his ideas for plots, came from books he read. The rich characters, the beautiful lines and the astonishing vocabulary all came out of his shiny head.
